From Dependence to Independence: Real Outcomes for Young Adults with Disabilities
Every young adult deserves the opportunity to live an independent, meaningful life, but for many individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, that path is often unclear and unsupported.
At Life College, we are changing that.
With your support, we can provide the structure, real-world experience, and ongoing guidance our students need to build confidence, gain employment, and become contributing members of their communities.
Your donation today helps create real opportunities and lasting independence.
Since 2014, Life College has helped young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities transition from dependence to independence through a structured, school-based program in Orange County.
Today, we serve 29 students through a model that combines classroom instruction, real-world internships, and community college support preparing students for meaningful, independent adult lives.
In partnership with Stanbridge University, students receive direct instruction in executive functioning, communication, emotional regulation, daily living skills, and workplace readiness.
What makes Life College different is simple:
Our students don’t just learn these skills they apply them every day.
“Words can't describe how Life College has positively changed my life. I didn't know what to do with my life before I joined the program. Life College has taught me to be a much more independent, confident, and happy individual. It also taught me the importance of friendship and teamwork.”
— Kira Smith, Life College Graduate
Students participate in community-based internships, including placements at Irvine BMW, where they build job skills, confidence, and real workplace experience.
We also support students attending Irvine Valley College and other local colleges, helping them stay organized, attend classes, and successfully complete their academic goals.
Impact at a Glance
- 29 students currently enrolled
- 80% of students complete the program
- 86% of graduates are employed
- 8 students currently enrolled at Irvine Valley College
- 100% of Life College students attending IVC have completed their academic goals, including certificate programs and AA degrees
These outcomes matter because while unemployment for individuals with disabilities remains as high as 85%, Life College students are gaining the skills and support needed to enter the workforce and live more independent lives.
“As a cofounder of Life College, I now have a daughter with Autism who completed the program and has been employed since 2017. She is a contributing member of the community, loves her work, and has built a strong network of friends and coworkers.”
— Greg Brashears
